The presence of a Jewish Community in Cittą di Castello, ancient economical and cultural junction of central and northern Italy, was buried in the memory of archives until 80s, when the studies of the Israeli historian Ariel Toaff, linked to this town by the thin thread of destiny, highlighted the existence of close economical and social relationships between the group of Jewish families, invited by the Municipality of Cittą di Castello in 14th century to revive a debit budget, and Alta Valle del Tevere. Documented by the Star of David impressed in the sandstone in Via del Vingone, sign of an ancient synagogue, the Jewish presence is supported by conspicuous archival traces and by the recent discovery, in the District Notarial Archives of Cittą di Castello, of several Hebrew parchments that contain, among other textes, very ancient copies of the Talmłd, recovered thanks to the intervention of the "Hebrew Fragments in Italy Project" in cooperation with Jerusalem, the Soprintendenza Archivistica of Umbria and the Archivio di Stato of Perugia. These parchments will be shown during the Meeting. In the moment in which the existence of these precious documents is communicated to the scientific world with the support of in-depth archival and historical studies, the Municipality of Cittą di Castello wants to remember and illustrate with the right emphasis the circumstances that constitute one of the roots of local history. The presence of Rabbi Elio Toaff, saved in Cittą di Castello from the Nazi persecution, together with tho son Ariel and Monsignor Beniamino Schivo, honoured of the title of "Just of Peoples" by the Foundation "Yad Vashem" of Jerusalem, and furthermore the agreement of "Shoah Foundation" created by Steven Spielberg, constitute in the year of teshuvąh, the sign of a further renewed link between the Jewish Community and the history of Alta Valle del Tevere.
